LS Lowry’s distinctive style is very appealing; his crowded industrial scenes filled with simple ‘matchstick men’ create a narrative that reflects everyday working life. Limiting the colour palette to mainly grey tones conveys a harsh, dull existence as you view a world where mundane routines and large factories dominate the landscape. In the street scene, the red tones add energy and a feeling of apprehension which responds to the people’s activity. I like the appearance of bold, outlined buildings against a distant skyline of chimney tops and hazy factory smoke as it is very atmospheric. Likewise I should consider combining precise marks with more subtle ones to produce contrasting foreground and background images.
