Layering Photographs

I investigated the idea of layering different images using my photographs of John Ryland’s Library. I printed onto acetate and paper and placed them together, rotating and cropping the images to form unusual juxtaposition of shapes and patterns. I could translate this idea by printing onto fabric, combining transparent layers with opaque ones.

I combined colour with black and white so shades are revealed and concealed across the surface. The bright, vivid tones look effective by exaggerating this effect. 


 
I like the luminous areas of white amongst dark shadows which highlight the intersecting, overlapping marks and suggest light reflections. The resulting images appear very atmospheric and intriguing as the photographs become fragmented and abstracted.
