Foundation Award: An innovative combination of textile processes for the
interiors market.
Final Design:
Inspired by the Industrial Revolution, the
elaborate circles reflect rotating cogs and wheels from textile machinery, with
intricate metal adornments such as brass rivets resembling the small mechanisms
involved. Chain-stitched lines across
the background are freely flowing and subtle, a contrast to the solid filled
shapes which are bold and richly coloured. These curved motifs make the design more
vibrant by creating a sense of movement and energy. The shimmering glitter
thread suggests sparks of energy and provides an opulent touch to the surface.
Development Samples:
Overlapping shapes cut from very different
fabrics, such as soft, thick velvet alongside smooth, shiny leather creates a
varied and exciting surface design. The white is too vivid, therefore
attracting unnecessary attention, and could be replaced with a more subdued
cream or layered with gold organza.
This design looks very sophisticated due
to the stylish corner arrangement, and could be reflected, rotated and repeated
across a larger area. The elegant background shapes are enhanced with bold
foreground motifs, and grey shimmering fabric enables the snippets of colour to
appear rich and alluring. Give the design cohesive, many small components work
together.
