Collaged Umbrella Structures

New ideas were introduced by researching the industrial machinery at the Museum of Science and Industry, as these structures are comparable to the framework of an umbrella. 


I was influenced by the bright, prominent colours green, blue and red, placed alongside dull, metallic tones. Collage was appropriate for these drawings since the layering of different papers creates an uneven surface like rust and peeling paint on machines.  Moreover, it enabled me to incorporate numbers and letters into the piece, as seen branded on many exhibits.

I isolated a section of the umbrella framework, creating an abstract image that resembled an industrial mechanism. Materials were assembled in strips to form striking lines, inspired by Futurist Artwork which features bold, angular images and elements of collage:
