Sample Stories

This task involved creating a narrative between works from the Origins and Sampling project. My favourite simply features an embroidered sample with a lacy knit draped out from beneath. Despite representing two diverse subjects: the barrier of a construction site and cross-section of a parasol, they act as a continuation of each other, drawn together by the rich red tones. A descending motion is established through the fluid lines of stitch, vertical pleats and flowing knitted panels. The transition from a dense surface of layered material into a holey, meshed structure suggests a process of disintegration. The postcard generated from this features a collage of different materials to represent the samples distinctive qualities: for example, printing with a variety of decorative lace for the knit. I emphasized the wooden sticks by using thick stripes of mount board as these strongly direct downward and contrast the rippling textures beneath.

This arrangement derives from the connecting themes of simple shapes and tonal colour as these strongly characterise each sample. Varying green tones shift across the surface and the basic geometric shapes circle, triangle, rectangles and lines create an interesting overall form.
