Sketchbook Drawings:

Ink & Bleach, Coloured Pencils

  

 

An explosion of colours, such as dreamy pinks and purples, transforms the dull urban scene into a fantasy place. This creates an imaginary, mysterious world which arouses curiosity into the activity depicted.  Splashes of ink and bleach disrupt and embellish the images, precisely drawn in colouring pencils. 

 

Marilyn Hallam’s work is saturated with light and colour. She takes risks, using vivid, garish shades and unusual colour combinations. In her work there are passages of repeated bar-like brushstrokes alongside more broadly painted areas.

Stylised lines and shapes

Precisely painted shapes with an expressive, fluid motion captures the clothing’s form and ripples in the fabric. The florescent glare of the ink and bleach background portrays the luminous shop lighting. 

 

Toby Ziegler's images are stylised using geometric mosaic-like motifs. The repeated patterning forms a rhythm of marks across the picture. His work combines the perfection of graphic design with painterly translation.

   

Clare lane depicts urban environments as block shapes of colour so they appear bold and graphic. Close-up shots are visually intriguing since the subject is abstracted from its context.

Paint using Palette Kn

Blurred

Sweeps of colour, applied using a palette knife, create a fleeting and obscure impression of the moment. The narrow composition with a dense central section is effective, conveying the crowded clothes shop. Bolder characters are surrounded by pallid, neutral tones which focus in on the action.  

 

Gerhard Richter’s over-painted photographs blur and disrupt the image, making the figurative more abstract and unclear. These fragile illusions represent our constant reshaping of the world.
