Raqib Shaw
Shaws’ opulent paintings reflect
the ornate style of Persian miniatures and Japanese textiles. I love the
beautiful glitter and jewel-encrusted surfaces, with diamonds, Sapphires and Rubies,
which have a seductive allure. However behind these magical scenes is a dark unsettling
world, a collection of violent images inspired by ancient myths and religious tales
from East and Western tradition.

Of Beasts and
Super-Beasts are incredibly detailed pieces depicting creatures and still-lives
drawn from the artist’s imagination, which highlights Shaw’s passion for
drawing. It is effective how detailed sketches are combined with his meticulous
technique of manipulating pools of enamel and metallic industrial paint with a
quill. This unique effect enhances details within the painting, such as coral,
feathers and flowers. Every motif is outlined in embossed gold which resembles
early Asian pottery and adds an attractive finish.
